Understanding Interpersonal Relationships

Relationships Advice

Whether interpersonal or in the business world, relationships can be delicate and fragile, and an effective relationship that is meant to be long term is going to require regular and consistent care and feeding. The care taken to continuously preserve and strengthen a relationship can often mean the difference between falling apart totally or weathering the storm as inevitable trials come about to tug at the very fabric of the relationship.

The creation of a relationship, and ensuring that it is both strong and effective is a necessity on many different levels. In an organization or a group, the effectiveness of the group as a whole is largely reflected by the strength of the relationship of the individuals. This also applies to how well the group as a whole is viewed by and works with the management of the group.

It takes almost as much effort to create an effective relationship as it does to create an ineffective one. In a group setting, think of how ineffective the group can be if the relationship is not strong amongst the group members. In a business environment, management frowns on groups that do not have good relationships because as a part of management, they already realize that the group will not be nearly as effective or organized as it could be. Even in an interpersonal setting, if there is tension or lack of a strong relationship between two people, the two cannot be as productive or share common goals as when there is a strong and effective relationship present.

Society in general can be defined as many different relationships with many different people and groups or organizations. Each relationship requires all parties to cooperate, to work together towards common goals and not towards private agendas. Each member needs to contribute their fair share. If there is tension in any particular relationship, it is for the benefit of all for steps to be taken to either repair that relationship so that it can function as effectively as possible, or to remove that relationship from your "relationship web". Tensions and private agendas do not work well in an effective and efficient relationship.

Effective relationships are formed when all parties are willing to take a realistic and compromising view of each other's positions. This is done out of trust, out of respect, and for the good of the relationship as a whole. If one member of the relationship takes the "it's all about me" perspective, the relationship will be stalled on that single point and be unable to move forward to achieve any common goals. Everyone has an opinion, and those opionions need to be respected. That does not mean you need to agree with other people's opinions, but to evaluate those opinions as possibly being valid, because they ARE valid for that person. Many times in an effective relationship, two parties will simply agree to disagree on a particular point, which is ok.
